Compare contractor bids line by line

Three bids can quote different work. Enter the amounts each contractor actually specifies, leave a cell blank when that scope is missing or unclear, and use the questions below to ask for comparable written proposals. This worksheet runs in your browser; entries are not sent to ProjectCostWise and are not saved automatically.

A blank cell is unknown, not $0. A $0 entry means the contractor explicitly included that item at no additional charge. Totals exclude unknown items and should not be treated as complete bids.

Make the bids comparable before deciding

Ask each contractor to use the same project description, measurements, finish choices and allowances. A lower total may reflect excluded work rather than a lower price for the same work. When a contractor gives one lump sum, request a written scope or mark the individual items unknown here; do not split the lump sum into invented amounts. Clarify whether taxes, permits, disposal, change orders and contingency are included.

Scope and exclusions

  • What specific tasks and materials are included?
  • What work is excluded or left as an allowance?
  • Who pays for permits, disposal and cleanup?

Schedule and payment

  • What are the start date and expected duration?
  • When are payments due, and for which milestones?
  • How will changes be priced and approved in writing?

Verification

  • Who will perform the work and supervise the site?
  • What license and insurance information applies locally?
  • What workmanship warranty is written into the agreement?

Use the cost methodology to understand ProjectCostWise planning estimates. This worksheet compares the written proposals you enter; it does not verify a contractor or replace a signed agreement. Do not pay or sign based only on its totals.
