Quick answer: at the current ProjectCostWise starting assumption, 1,800 sq ft of siding at standard complexity produces a $14,400–$36,000 planning range. Material choice, repairs and access can move the number. See how the estimate is calculated.
What affects siding replacement cost?
- Vinyl, fiber cement, engineered wood or other material
- Existing siding removal and disposal
- Sheathing, rot or moisture repairs
- House height, gables and difficult access
- Window, door, corner and trim details
- Insulation, housewrap and flashing upgrades
Three scope levels
Lighter scope
A simple one-story home with sound walls, easy access and economical siding can stay closer to the lower end.
Standard scope
Removal, routine wall prep, new weather barrier, trim work and mid-range siding are common in a standard project.
Higher-complexity scope
Multi-story access, extensive rot, premium materials, detailed trim and insulation upgrades can push the budget higher.
How to compare siding bids
Confirm the exact siding product, exposure, trim package, flashing method, removal scope, wall repairs, insulation and cleanup. Ask what happens if hidden rot is found after old siding comes off.
Measure the exterior scope consistently
Wall area is not the same as house floor area. Ask bidders to describe the measured siding surface, how they account for openings, and whether gables, trim, soffits and detached structures are included. Specify material and profile before comparing totals. If the existing siding hides water damage, require a written unit price or change-order process for repairs discovered after removal; do not assume an unknown repair is covered by the planning estimate.
Make siding bids comparable
- Removal: Is old siding removal, disposal and protection of landscaping included?
- Water management: What housewrap, flashing and window or door transitions are specified?
- Trim: Are corners, fascia, soffit and painted details included?
- Hidden damage: How are rotten sheathing and framing documented and priced?
- Finish: Is painting or factory finish included, and who handles final cleanup?
Use the free bid comparison worksheet to mark exclusions. The estimator's editable square-foot rate is a planning assumption and cannot account for every wall detail or concealed repair.
Questions to ask contractors
